Mid West Ports Authority will welcome an unusual visitor to their berths on Saturday, January 26 as one of the Royal Australian Navy’s submarines prepares to dock at the Port of Geraldton.
HMAS Dechaineux, which has a height of 15m from fin to keel, will arrive at approximately 12pm Saturday with about 60 crew expected to come ashore.
Mid West Ports Chief Executive Officer Dr Rochelle Macdonald said they received a call early Thursday morning to facilitate the arrival of the submarine over the weekend.
“We are thrilled with the opportunity to welcome the Royal Australian Navy to the Port of Geraldton,” she said.
“It is a fantastic opportunity to showcase our Port as an inviting and accessible location for visits from Navy vessels in the future.
“The submarine crew will also come ashore and stay in our hotels, dine at our eateries and have also shown interest in joining our Australia Day celebrations at the foreshore.
“It is a rare opportunity we plan to make the most of.”
This is the second visit for the Dechaineux, who last visited Geraldton in 2002.
The Dechaineux is expected to spend several nights in the Port of Geraldton.
