Mid West Ports Authority are expecting a bumper cruise schedule over the holiday season, with preparations well underway to welcome Geraldton’s first overnight cruise ship.

MWPA Chief Executive Dr Rochelle Macdonald said she was thrilled the Azamara Quest would be able to spend the night inside Geraldton Port.

“Our team have been working incredibly hard to have the berth ready and looking fantastic for our first overnight cruise ship in just a few weeks’ time,” she said.

“MWPA strives to be a sustainable gateway for trade and tourism in the region and this cruise ship is a perfect example of the type of opportunity we want to continue facilitating for the Mid West.

“It’s a chance to not only welcome a cruise ship that has never been to Geraldton before, but to give passengers and crew more time to experience what the Mid West has to offer.

“We’re thrilled to be working with the City of Greater Geraldton to make this event possible.”

Sailing from Indonesia, the Azamara Quest will spend several days at sea before arriving in the Mid West.

On disembarking, passengers will be invited to enjoy an ‘Australiana’ themed welcoming event sponsored by Tourism WA.

The event will feature local foods, entertainment and some friendly native wildlife.

Passengers will then be able to embark on tours to local Mid West attractions or make their way into town to explore the Geraldton CBD.

City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn encouraged local retailers and restaurants to open their doors for the overnight stay.

“We’re looking forward to giving the Azamara Quest a very warm welcome and we hope our local businesses will too,” he said.

“It’s all about creating memorable experiences for our visitors as they’re the ones that spread the word about how great how City is.

“Geraldton is continuing to cement itself as a top destination for Cruise ships to stop and we don’t see this slowing down anytime soon!”

Geraldton Port will also welcome three more cruise ships throughout December and January.

The Seabourn Sojourn will be the next to arrive on December 28.
