The Sun Princess arrives
The Mid West Ports Authority welcomed the Sun Princess to berth 3 this morning as passengers and crew geared up to spend a day visiting local attractions.
Many of the 1941 passengers and 863 crew members were welcomed ashore by MWPA staff, Cruise Geraldton Committee members and dedicated Cruise Ship Meet & Greet Volunteers.
Visitors were given information on some uniquely Geraldton events to enjoy, including tours by Latitude Gallery, munching down on a crayfish roll at The Gerald or enjoying live music at the Freemasons.
Many also opted to check out our local attractions, including the Anglican Cathedral, Kalbarri Gorges and Okabella Homestead.
MWPA Harbour Master Leon Strydom said having cruise ships able to berth at the Port was a major advantage to the local community.
“It’s a real benefit to Geraldton now the cruise ships are able to berth at the Port rather than anchoring offshore and tendering passengers in,” he said.
“It makes it a lot safer for passengers, which entices more to get off the vessel and enjoy all that Geraldton has to offer.
“It’s a boost to the local economy but, on top of that, it’s also a great spectacle for locals watching the cruise ship come in to Port.”
The Sun Princess is the eighth cruise ship to visit Geraldton this year and is expected to return again in October and November.
It’s visits are supported by Cruise Geraldton - made up of several key stakeholders including MWPA, the City of Greater Geraldton, Bus West, attractions, retailers, tour operators and a shipping agent.
Mr Strydom said he looked forward to welcoming many more cruise vessels in the future.
“There are many people behind the scenes who work to make these exciting events possible,” he said.
“This includes MWPA, the Cruise Geraldton Committee, volunteers and Svitzer - who offer their tug services for cruise vessels at a discounted rate.
“These organisations, along with several others, play an important part in making these visits possible.”
The Sun Princess is expected to leave Geraldton Port at about 4pm this afternoon.
Locals can catch a glimpse of its departure from the viewing platform at the Esplanade.
