Throughout 2020 Mid West Ports Authoirty will welcome three new state-of-the-art tugs from Svitzer Australia to Geraldton Port.

To help name the new vessels, MWPA and Svitzer collaborated to run the “Name your Tugs” competition.

Two entries were chosen from community submissions and one from Geraldton staff and Svitzer Geraldton crew.

We received 114 entries in total and the following names were selected:

  • North – Thomas ‘Martin’ North is a highly regarded Mid West Ports Harbour Master both locally and within the Shipping & Maritime Industry.  During his career he developed and introduced a number of systems to the port which significantly improved safety and operational efficiencies.  In addition, he established a Pilot Training Program providing an alternate career pathway for Marine Pilots and MWPA is still the only Australian port to have such a program in place.  He had an amazing ability to relate to people and was an upholder of the Port’s values long before they were written in ink (staff nomination).
  • Abrolhos – The Abrolhos Islands are the jewel in our ocean, an icon the local community identifies with significantly.  ‘The Islands’ hold many stories of shipwrecks, mutiny and maritime history, have long played an important role in our revered Western Rock Lobster Industry and in more recent times are being recognised for their international tourism value (community nomination).

  • Wilu – Aboriginal word for ‘sea, seaside or salt water’ (community nomination).  The Mid West has long standing connections with the Yamaji People of this region and we would like to acknowledge and respect this heritage.
