Port of Geraldton Master Planning Project

Mid West Ports Authority is undertaking Master Planning at the Port of Geraldton.

During 2017, the Board and Executives focused on planning initiatives to create and sustain a high performing organisation. As part of this strategic outlook, MWPA identified the need to undertake a detailed Port Master Planning process for the Port of Geraldton.

Work began early in 2018 to investigate how the Port, its corridors and the Fishing Boat Harbour could develop to accommodate potentially significant additional trade over the next 30 years and support the activation of the Mid West community. As the project progressed, MWPA shifted its focus to detailed planning to expand the Port’s capacity over the next 0-15 years.

We believe the benefits of port master planning include:

  • communicating the Port Vision to a wide range of stakeholders
  • increasing industry and investment confidence for future development and trade growth
  • unlocking latent capacity in the Port through operational improvements
  • identifying and protecting critical transport and infrastructure corridors connecting the port to the wider freight network
  • understanding land requirements and ensuring there is sufficient land supply to meet customer needs
  • providing strong environmental awareness and protection
  • ensuring successful management of the Port-City interface, and
  • activating and supporting the Mid West economy.

We believe addressing these issues through a port master planning program will add significant economic value to the Port, community and financial partners.

The master planning process has included broad consultation with the community and stakeholder groups regarding the future of the Port.

Project Stages

Following the appointment of GHD Advisory as project consultants, the Geraldton Port Master Planning Project was divided into three stages.

Port Master Plan stages

Stage 1

Stage 1, which was completed in September 2018, included a detailed study of Geraldton Port and surrounding areas.

It also involved consultation with a number of relevant stakeholders and a community survey which received 230 responses.

Stage 2

Stage 2 was completed in May 2019 and included a consideration of several projects which could help maximise the capacity of the Port of Geraldton, including high level cost estimation and potential staging.

Stage 3

Stage 3 is currently underway and will include stakeholder and community engagement on the work done to date. A copy of the draft Port Master Plan and Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) Sheet are available via the links below. Public submissions are currently being accepted until 3 December 2019.

Public Information Session

We are holding a Public Information Session on Tuesday 22nd October at 6pm at the Spalding Park Golf Club to present the plan and answer community queries. RSVP is required for catering purposes via the following link.
