Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Geraldton Port Maximisation Project?

The Geraldton Port Maximisation Project (PMaxP) is a major upgrade of Geraldton Port designed to make the port safer, more efficient, and better prepared for future trade.

The State Government is investing $350 million to deliver these upgrades.

The project focuses on improving existing infrastructure to ensure we can continue to meet the needs of our customers and our community in the years to come.

Why is this project happening?

Geraldton Port is handling increasing types and volumes of products, with trade expected to continue to grow in the future.

Upgrading Geraldton Port to meet these increasing demands helps to create local jobs, attract new industries, and keep the Mid West economy strong for years to come.

How long will the project take?

The project is being executed over four years, beginning in 2023 and continuing through to 2027.

What upgrades are being built?

Key upgrades to enable the port to operate more efficiently, safely and handle more trade include:
• Construction of a new Berth 1
• Improvements to Berth 6
• A new tug facility
• A breakwater extension
• Upgrades to fuel lines
• Road improvements in the Port West area
• New equipment to help move products more efficiently, including the lease 11 truck unloader.

Will there be dredging?

Yes. Some dredging is required to support the new berth and improve navigation within the port.

Strict environmental monitoring and management plans are in place to protect marine life and water quality during this work.

The community will be kept informed as these works progress.

What environmental protections are in place?

The project has been through both State and Federal environmental assessments. Several management plans guide how work is carried out, including:
• Marine fauna protection
• Water quality monitoring
• Coastal process management
• Construction and dredging controls
These plans aim to minimise impacts on the marine environment, beaches, and local wildlife.

Will the project affect the community?

Some construction activity may cause temporary noise, traffic changes, or visual impacts.

Mid West Ports is working to keep disruptions at a minimum and will share updates with the community as work progresses.
