  • $9.95 million investment strengthens Geraldton Port’s capability to support regional exports
  • Critical infrastructure upgrade to extend asset life by more than 20 years
  • Project delivered safely, on time and on budget

Mid West Ports recently completed a $9.95 million upgrade of Geraldton Port’s Lease 88 storage facility, strengthening port capability, improving operational performance and extending the life of this critical asset by more than 20-years.

Lease 88 provides essential storage capacity for customers at Geraldton Port. Originally constructed in 2006, the facility required investment following years of exposure to coastal conditions, corrosion and weather events.

The upgrade delivered a range of improvements to the 6,000m² facility, including structural repairs and refurbishment, upgrades to cargo handling capability, improved corrosion protection and the installation of a new purpose-built dust extraction system to support improved environmental performance.

The new dust extraction system improves the facility’s ability to manage dust generated during iron ore handling. The system works by creating airflow that captures dust inside the shed and returns any extracted material back into the facility, helping reduce the potential for dust escaping during operations.

Mid West Ports Chief Executive Officer Damian Tully said investing in existing infrastructure was essential to maintaining a safe, reliable and efficient port.

“Lease 88 is an important part of Geraldton Port’s export infrastructure, and this upgrade ensures it can continue supporting our customers and the region’s industries well into the future.

“Delivering this project safely, on time and on budget is a significant achievement and reflects the commitment of our project team contractors and customers who worked together to complete this upgrade.

“With more than 18,000 hours worked without a lost-time injury, the project demonstrates the strong focus on safety and quality outcomes throughout delivery.”
