To access the Geraldton Port Secure Zone, all personnel must hold and display two separate credentials.
What is the difference between an MSIC and a Geraldton Port Access Card (GPAC)?
An MSIC is a nationally recognised security credential issued following a background security assessment. An MSIC demonstrates that the holder has met the background checking requirements; it does not itself create a right of entry to a port or secure zone.
A Geraldton Port Access Card (GPAC) is Mid West Ports' local access credential. It determines what areas of Geraldton Port you are authorised to enter and is the physical access card required to operate gates, doors and access control systems. Both cards must be held for ongoing access to the Geraldton Port Secure Zone.
I already have a valid MSIC. Do I still need a GPAC?
Yes. A valid MSIC alone does not provide access to Geraldton Port.
You must also hold a current GPAC if you require ongoing access to secure areas within the port.
Does having an MSIC guarantee my application for a GPAC will be approved?
No. Applicants still need a genuine operational requirement to access Geraldton Port, and MWPA may verify that requirement with the employer or relevant MWPA business area before granting access.
When do I need to move to the new GPAC system?
New applicants will receive a GPAC when applying for port access after the commencement date.
Existing port users with current access to the port will transition to the new system when their current port access expires and requires renewal.
How long is a GPAC valid for?
Applicants can choose either:
Your GPAC expiry date will be printed on the card.
Does my GPAC expire when my MSIC expires?
Not necessarily. The GPAC and MSIC are separate credentials and may have different expiry dates.
It is your responsibility to ensure both remain current. However, applicants are encouraged to align renewal periods wherever possible.
What happens if my MSIC expires?
Your ability to access the Geraldton Port Secure Zone will be suspended until you provide evidence of a current and valid MSIC.
Port access to the landside or waterside restricted zones cannot be maintained without a valid MSIC.
What should I do if my GPAC is lost, stolen or damaged?
Report a lost, stolen or damaged GPAC to Mid West Ports as soon as possible.
Lost or stolen cards will be deactivated to prevent unauthorised use. A replacement card fee may apply.
Can I lend my GPAC to another person?
No. GPACs are issued to an individual and must only be used by the cardholder.
Sharing, lending or allowing another person to use your card may result in access being suspended or revoked.
How do I update my employer or company details?
If your employer, company or role changes, you should contact the Port Access Officer as soon as possible.
Updated employer verification may be required to confirm your ongoing operational need for access.
Do I need to complete an induction before receiving a GPAC?
Yes. You must meet Mid West Ports' applicable induction requirements before access can be activated.
Your inductions must also remain current while you hold port access.
Can someone collect my GPAC on my behalf?
If you are unable to collect your card personally, please contact the Port Access Officer before attending the Gatehouse to discuss whether alternative arrangements are available.
Does the GPAC include a photograph?
Yes, the photograph used for your GPAC may be obtained from your verified MSIC record or taken at the Gatehouse if required.
Why are GPACs colour coded?
GPACs use different colours to identify broad categories of port users and assist with on-site identification and security management.
The colour of a GPAC does not, by itself, determine which areas of the port the cardholder can access.
Can my company pay for multiple employee cards?
Yes. Approved organisations can establish Purchase Order arrangements for the payment of access cards and renewals.
Please contact Mid West Ports to discuss bulk billing options.
What happens if my access renewal is overdue?
Failure to renew your GPAC before expiry may result in your port access being suspended.
To avoid disruption to your access, submit your renewal before your current GPAC expires.
Are visitors required to hold a GPAC?
No. Visitors may be granted temporary access in accordance with Mid West Ports visitor management procedures.
Additional conditions, escort requirements and identification checks may apply.
Can I access all areas of the port with a GPAC?
No. Access rights are assigned according to your operational requirements and approved access level.
Holding a GPAC does not automatically provide access to all secure areas of the port.
How will I know when my GPAC is due for renewal?
Your GPAC expiry date is printed on your card.
Mid West Ports may also issue renewal reminders before your card expires; however, cardholders are responsible for ensuring their GPAC and MSIC remain current.
